JENNA CHAN (FALK) RM

I love being part of the team at Cedar House Birth Collective, and I am excited to meet you and your family as you begin the journey of welcoming a new baby into your lives.  The Comox Valley has been my home for the majority of my life, and it is such an honour to care for the families of the area.  Small towns are pretty special, and if you have been here awhile, I would not be surprised if we share some connections!  But whether you have been a local forever, or are just joining our community here, our goal is that you feel welcomed, well supported and safe during your care here with us.  We are a team from various education routes and backgrounds, each with something unique to offer.

Growing up rurally, I learned to love the new life and birth that occurs in country and farm life.  My enjoyment of birth grew into a love for midwifery and families when I completed my initial midwifery training at a birth centre in the Philippines, which was connected to an accredited USA program.  I was immersed in birth as a normal life event, and became skilled at handling emergencies in low-resource settings.  I was awed by the strength that the women carried as they navigated their labours and births.  Following this, I spent a year in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where I lived in a remote village and was privileged to be a part of the initial stages of building a birth centre.

Eventually, the island was pulling me home, and I transitioned back to Canada, where I completed a midwifery bridging program at Ryerson University in Toronto.  It was really good to spend a few years in Ontario, adding to my knowledge and experience and growing familiar with the incredible services that we have available to us in Canada. Now, it feels like dream to be able to practice my profession in my home town.  With gratitude, I respectfully acknowledge that I live and work on the unceded traditional territory of the K'ómoks First Nation.

I value sharing evidence based information with you and encouraging you in your journey, whether at home or in the hospital.  We will work together to keep you and your baby safe and healthy and for you to have a fulfilling birth experience, no matter what route of delivery occurs. While I enjoy updating my education, you and your family are my greatest teachers, and I am sure that I will be amazed at your courage, determination and love as you bring your baby into this world in your own way.  When I am not catching babies, I enjoy time spent with my husband and toddler, family and friends as well as casual photography, travelling and everything outdoors, including camping, hiking, horse-back-riding or hanging out around a beach fire.
